The FIA has added the third DRS zone for the next F1 championship race in Bahrain to facilitate overtaking and continued the last year’s trend of adding third DRS zones.
This year F1 cars has simpler aerodynamics to help drivers follow each other more closely and DRS is more powerful than ever before because of the greater gap between the wing elements in the open position, which further reduces air resistance during activation period and increases speed difference.
The new DRS zone is located on a straight after the third corner which has often been the point where drivers were battling each other.
The detection point for the new DRS zone is 50 meters before the first corner and the activation is 23 m after the third corner.
