Charles Leclerc took his first win of the season and first at his home race after a dominant performance from pole position on the streets of Monte Carlo in a red flag race that eliminated the need for the pitstops.

A big crash between Sergio Perez and Kevin Magnussen brought the Monaco Grand Prix to a halt in the first round, and Carlos Sainz got a new chance after having a flat tire in a clash with Oscar Piastri.

Sainz took the inside of the first corner in an attempt to take over second place from Piastri, but the Australian was able to hold onto the position due to better exiting the corner when he made contact that punctured Sainz’s front left tyre.

Sainz parked his Ferrari already two corners later, but then there was contact between Magnussen and Perez, which ejected the innocent Hulkenberg, which immediately caused a red flag.

The starting order for the restart, which is scheduled for 15:44, will be almost the same as for the first, so Sainz will get another chance to start from third place.

During the break, the drivers changed tires, so the drivers who started on medium chose hard, and the drivers who started on hard chose medium so that they would not have to pit again until the end of the race.

This eventually happened, so Leclerc led the entire race while Piastri, Sainz and Norris followed him without any possibility to change positions, and the first ten drivers at the start finished the race in the same order.

Russell held a slightly larger gap to Norris which at one point was 20 seconds until Sainz slowed down to deny Norris the opportunity to change tires without losing positions which would have made him dangerous at the end of the race.

This is Leclerc’s first victory since the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix and the sixth of his career, and Piastria’s first podium this year, while Sainz finished third after being lucky with a red flag that gave him a new chance to start from third place.

Norris could not do better than fourth place in the second McLaren, while Russell managed to last the whole race on medium tires and win ten points for fifth place.

Hamilton is the first of the leaders to change tires during the race as he had a sufficient advantage over Tsunoda, and after that Verstappen did the same, so there was no change of positions either – Verstappen finished sixth, his worst result in the race he completed since the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix, and Hamilton was seventh, as he was in 2021 at this track.

Tsunoda continued his impressive form this season with eighth for RB ahead of Albon who scored his first point of the season and first for WIlliams, with Gasly also scoring his first point of the season after surviving a fierce attack from Ocon before the red flag.

Alonso finished 11th after driving deliberately slow to give Stroll enough time to change tires and get back without losing a position, but Stroll blew a good chance by hitting the fence at Turn 10 and had to pit again for a new set of soft tires .

The next race is in two weeks in Canada.
