Alonso and Vandoorne with 70 penalty places in Baku

Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne have together received 70 penalty places at the start of Azerbaijan GP after Honda introduced new elements of their problematic Honda RA617H power unit.

Even before the start of the weekend, McLaren drivers knew that they were doomed to the start the race from the back of the grid because Honda decided to use the sixth turbocharger and MGU-H while they decided to take advantage of the situation and introduced more new elements.

Alonso tested a new Honda ‘spec 3’ engine (fourth engine in the season) that would not be used in the rest of the weekend, and returning to the old specification has brought Spaniard to his fifth engine this season, together withthe new MGU-K, MGU-H and the turbo charger which combined give 25 places grid drop.

Alonso will receive 40 penalty places at the start and Stoffel Vandoorne will receive 15 extra places after his initial 15 places grid drop, with an additional MGU-H and turbo charger, giving a total of 30 penalty spots. The team changed Vandoorne’s engine and MGU-K, but he did not get the penalty for that because it was his third engine and the fourth MGU-K.

In addition to McLaren, late modifications were made by Red Bull (third MGU-H for both drivers) and Renault (also the third MGU-H for Hulkenberg).
