Fernando Alonso has successfully completed his rookie orientation program for Indy 500 in his first appearance in IndyCar machine at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Rookie have to lap the oval circuit within the prescribed average speeds to get a permission to race at full speeds.
Alonso’s goal was to drive 10 laps with average speed between 330 to 338 km/h, 15 laps at speed between 338 to 346 km/h and 15 laps between 346 to 354 km/h.
The Spaniard drove 51 laps in his IndyCar car prepared by McLaren/Honda/Andretti and set the fastest lap with an average speed of 353,533 km/h.
“It was fun, a good way to start, gradually increasing the speed,” said Alonso.
“At the beginning, it was a little harder to reach the minimum speed, but the next step was a good feeling.”
“I hope we will be able to drive a lot of laps and start feeling a car, at the moment car is driving me.”
“I feel more comfortable because after 30 or 40 laps you can start adjusting your lines, which gear to use in which corner.”
“At this point everything looks good, but now starts the real thing.”
Official training for 500 miles of Indianapolis begins on Monday after Spanish GP (May 15).
