Two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso will compete for the third time in the Indy 500 race and will drive for the Arrow McLaren SP team.
Alonso will drive the No. 66 car and become the third driver of the team which will compete in the IndyCar Championship in 2020, with the Spaniard will test the new car for the first time on track on April 30, on the open test for the Indy 500.
“I’m a racer and the Indy 500 is the greatest race in the world,” said Alonso.
“I love the incredible fans who make this race so special for us drivers and make you come back. I have the utmost respect for this race and everyone who finishes it, and all I want to do is race against them and do my best, as always . ”
Alonso is no longer has an ambassador role at McLaren since the beginning of the year, but that will not stop him from driving for them again at the Indy 500, as they did last year when they did not qualify for the race due to lack of preparation.
“It was important for me to explore my options for this race, but the Arrow McLaren SP has always been at the top,” said Alonso.
“I have a special relationship with McLaren. We’ve been through a lot together and that creates a bond.”
“But more than that, I’m thrilled with the new organization and operation, which is evolving into a strong package with a partnership with Chevrolet.”
“The team has experience, well-qualified people and great resources and I’m sure we can be competitive.”
