Two time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso will perform at this year’s edition of the legendary 24h Le Mans endurance race with Toyota in the highest LMP1 category.
Alonso has already highlighted his desire to compete at 24h Le Mans in an effort to win the Triple crown of motorsport and last weekend he also raced in 24h of Daytona in LMP2 Ligier to prepare for this endurance race.
The Spaniard has already tested the Toyota LMP1 car TS050 Hybrid at the end of last year in Bahrain, and an agreement has now been made that Alonso will compete for as many races in the WEC Championship as possible.
Formula 1 continues to be his priority, but he’ll continue to hunt his goal – the Triple crown of motorsport.
“We tried to go to Indy last year, we were close,” said Alonso.
“This year I have a chance to race at Le Mans thanks to McLaren. This is a great challenge where a lot of things can go wrong, but I’m ready and looking forward to that fight.”
“My agreement to enter the WEC series is only possible thanks to understanding and good relationship with McLaren and I am very happy they understand how much this means to me.”
“But there is no chance that this challenge will divert me from my main goal – Formula 1 with McLaren.”
“My goal in 2018 is to be competitive in every Grand Prix and I’m sure we will be closer to that goal.”
Alonso will contest four WEC races this season – Spa, Le Mans, Silverstone and Shanghai.
