AlphaTauri is the fifth team to kick start their 2022 F1 campaign as they released studio photos of the new AT03 car, which we will see live for the first time at the pre-season test in Barcelona.
In the third season under the name AlphaTauri, the team retained a similar visual identity as last year and the same driving lineup made up of Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda and will continue to use Honda power units despite withdrawal of the Japanese manufacturer from the sport last year.
Although the car shown is just a basic version of the one that will appear on the track for the first time, it can be seen that it has aggressively undercuted sidepods, like the Aston Martin AMR22, and almost square cooling sidepod inlets.
But unlike the Aston Martin, the AlphaTauri’s sidepods aggressively descend down at the rear end towards the rear tyres although they don’t taper as hard towards the center of the car as McLaren MCL36 does.
Last season, the team finished sixth in the standings after a season-long battle with Alpine, although they had the fifth fastest car on average, which is mostly due to the inconsistent performances of the young Tsunoda, who had his first F1 season.
“I’m excited that we’ve finally unveiled what our F1 car for 2022 will look like,” team boss Franz Tost said.
“It’s a whole new era for F1 and we hope this package will be very strong after last year’s success.”
With last year’s result, the team equaled its best result from 2008 when they also finished sixth, and in its history, which began in 2006 under the name Toro Rosso, they achieved two victories – at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix (Vettel) and the 2020 Italian Grand Prix (Gasly).
