The Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team has unveiled its F1 team for 2021 and the new AMR21 car in a predominantly dark green color marking the return of the famous British brand to Formula 1 after 1960.

Racing Point has been renamed Aston Martin this year thanks to owner Lawrence Stroll and in addition to changing its visual identity from pink to dark green and a new title sponsor Cognizant, the team also brought in four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel has replaced longtime team driver Sergio Perez and will be a new teammate to Lance Stroll who joined the team in 2019.

At the presentation of the new team and car for 2021, Aston Martin emphasized its ambitions for the new season and future plans in Formula 1, and the new AMR21 is an evolution of the predecessor with which it shares the chassis and many other parts to reduce costs.

The new AMR21 retains a nose modeled after Mercedes, similar to that of last year’s Racing Point RP20, but with an even greater narrowing of the tip of the nose towards the cockpit for better airflow around the monocoque.

The car will continue to use Mercedes power units, transmission and rear suspension, but also systems like hydraulics that teams are allowed to buy from other teams.

Last year, Racing Point provoked controversial reactions by copying the design of the 2019 Mercedes and the new AMR21 continues the same development path in the last year of the current technical regulations before the big regulations change in 2022.

Aston Martin spent its two development tokens on a redesign of the side safety structures on the chassis that allowed them to use the high side sidepod intakes first used by Ferrari in 2017 and from 2020 onwards by Mercedes as well.

Such a solution allows for better airflow around the underside of the sidepods by moving the side safety structure upwards, and last year Racing Point was the only team not to use such a solution.

Also, like the new Mercedes F1 W12, the Aston Martin AMR21 has a big bulge on the engine cover thanks to the new architecture of the Mercedes power unit for 2021.

New title sponsor Cognizant is an American multinational digital corporation that provides digital products, IT and operational services and Aston Martin has confirmed a multi-year sponsorship agreement ahead of its return to Formula 1 to strengthen its financial structure and IT expertise.

“The return of Aston Martin to Formula 1 after more than 60 years is an important moment in the history of the sport,” said team owner Lawrence Stroll.

“Everyone knows what Aston Martin represents, but the F1 team will allow us to take the essence of the brand to new places, build the strong foundations we laid on previous iterations of the team.”

Despite the fact that they can no longer have the pink car that came from the previous main sponsor BWT, the team continued to work with the Austrian company, which maintained a subtle presence on the new car.
