Aston Martin has unveiled its Safety and Medical cars for the new 2021 F1 season, which will alternate with Mercedes cars that will be red from this year for better visibility.

Aston Martin returns to Formula 1 after 1960, and given the close relationship with Mercedes, an agreement was reached on the division of duties around safety and medical cars for the F1 season 2021.

“We are thrilled to announce a new partnership with Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG regarding official safety and medical cars for the FIA Formula 1 Championship,” said Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

“Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG are well-known brands and we are proud of their presence in our amazing sport. Safety and medical cars are an extremely important part of Formula 1 and always protect our drivers.”

“Last season we witnessed their speed and dedication in rescuing Romain Grosjean in his dramatic accident, and Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG are perfectly equipped to be able to react and ensure driver safety.”

Aston Martin’s safety car is a Vantage whose power has increased by 25 hp (535 hp in total) from a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine, and which accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds with 685 Nm of torque.

The driver of the safety car will still be Bernd Maylander.

Also, aerodynamic refinements allow it 155.6 kg of downforce at 200 km/h, more than 60 kg from the standard Vantage at the same speed.

The medical car is a DBX, Aston Martin’s first SUV, to be driven by Alan van der Merwe with co-driver Dr. Ian Roberts.

Mercedes’ 2021 safety car is still the Mercedes AMG-GTR with 585 hp and the medical car is the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Estate with 510 hp.

As of this season, Mercedes cars will be red for better visibility, as at the 2020 Tuscany GP when they were red in honor of Ferrari’s 1000th F1 race.
