Daniel Ricciardo set the fastest time in the first free practice for Bahrain GP after he improved fastest time from Valtteri Bottas 15 minutes before the end of the session while his team mate Max Verstappen suffered engine problems.
Ricciardo set the fastest lap on soft tyres (1:31.060), 2.3 seconds slower than last year’s pole position and track record that Bottas set in Q3 while Finn was second fastest on today’s first free practice.
Verstappen did not set any laptime after the problems with Renault power unit.
Raikkonen and Vettel were third and fourth fastest for Ferrari with four tenths behind the fastest Ricciardo – Finn was 0.012 seconds faster than the German with one lap more under his belt.
Hamilton was only the fifth fastest with a 1.2 seconds gap to Ricciardo after making a mistake in the first attempt on the soft tyres, and Grosjean was the sixth for Haas, albeit on supersoft tyres, showing that the US team would again be very competitive on the track where they finished fifth in their first season.
Toro Rosso Honda was surprisingly fast in the first practice – Gasly was the seventh fastest with the highest speed on the speed trap and the highest speed on the start finish line, while Magnussen in Haas split Renault’s drivers Sainz and Hulkenberg in eighth place.
Alonso was the 11th fastest for McLaren, who brought some improvements to Bahrain and Leclerc was 12th fastest in Sauber, thus separating Alonso and Vandoorne.
Williams was in 14th and 15th place, more than two seconds for the fastest Ricciard in front of the other Toro Rosso and the other Sauber, while Force India drivers Perez and Ocon had a slow start in Bahrain and ended up in the last two places among the drivers who set the time.
