Valtteri Bottas set a new record of the current configuration of Silverstone after he clocked 1:29.106 on soft tires, two tenths faster than last year’s best time of the weekend in Q2.
Hamilton was only 0.078 seconds slower in second place and thus secured one-two for Mercedes in the first practice on soft tyres, while the next six fastest drivers used supersofts while setting their fastest laps.
Red Bull was the second fastest behind the Mercedes, and Verstappen was three tenths faster than Ricciardo, although it was half a second behind faster Mercedes.
Kimi Raikkonen was the fifth for Ferrari after saying that his future is in Ferrari’s hands, and Sebastian Vettel was four tenths slower than his teammate after he tried a new ‘shield’ cockpit protection.
Daniil Kvyat was seventh fastest for Toro Rosso on an aerodynamically demanding Silverstone, tenth in front of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, while tenth Vandoorne was only five hundreds slower than Alonso.
Force India was slower than their midfield rivals in the 12th and 13th places, and Stroll settled between the two Haas drivers in the 15th place.
The slowest were Renault and Sauber drivers who were more than three seconds slower than Bottas.
The second free practice starts at 2 pm.
