Robert Kubica scored his first and only victory in Formula 1 exactly nine years ago – it was also first and only win for the BMW Sauber.

Hamilton was leading the standings with 38 points after his Monaco win, Raikkonen was on 35, Massa on 34, and Kubica on 32 – it was that tense after the first six races in 2008.

In Canada, Hamilton was the fastest in qualifying with as much as 0.612 seconds ahead of Kubica and 0.849 seconds ahead of Raikkonen after drivers struggled with disintegrating asphalt in the slowest corner on the track. It was second pole for Hamilton in 2008 after starting first in the first race in Australia.

Hamilton was six seconds ahead of Kubica and another second in front of Raikkonen who was very quick when he warmed his tyres, but Hamilton hit Raikkonen in the back while the Finn stood on the box exit beside Kubica with red lights on. Rosberg then hit the rear of Hamilton. Both Hamilton and Raikkonen retired, and Hamilton and Rosberg were penalized with 10 places at the start of next race in France.

Kubica was on the two stop strategy and was let by his team mate Heidfeld who was on a one stop strategy, which in the end it turned out to be crucial in his victory because the BMW Sauber scored 1-2 although Heidfeld was a bit disappointed as he could win if he didn’t let Kubica pass.

David Coulthard was third in Red Bull, fourth Glock in Toyota, fifth Massa in Ferrari, and sixth in Trulli in second Toyota. Barrichello in Honda and Vettel in Toro Rosso won the last points in the race.

With this victory, Kubica took the lead in the drivers championship with 42 points in front of Massa and Hamilton who had 38 points each and Raikkonen with 35 points.

Ferrari continued to lead with 73 points, but BMW Williams had only three points less while McLaren was 20 points behind Ferrari.
