Formula 1 car must pass strict static, impact and roll tests before they take the track in order to meet the necessary safety standards. The tests must be carried under FIA instructions and in the presence of the FIA technical delegate.
The cars have to pass front, side and rear impact tests focused on the car’s survival cell which must remain undamaged. All structural damage must be exclusively in the zones of car’s impact absorbing structures such as sidepods and nose.
Steering column must also pass a test that simulates the collision of driver’s head and the steering wheel. The column must deform to absorb most of the impact energy and the quick release mechanism of the steering wheel must not be damaged.
