Fernando Alonso will first test the new McLaren F1 car for 2018, which will use Renault’s engines for the first time in history.
Alonso and McLaren hope that in the first preseason test in Barcelona, which begins on February 26th, will gather considerably more miles than 2017 when they had problems with Honda RA617H power unit.
Last season, on the troubled first day, McLaren completed only 29 laps, and Honda had tremendous problems with vibrations caused by the change in the architecture of their power unit.
After three seasons of frustration and unfulfilled expectations, McLaren should be able to regularly score points and challenge for the podiums while Renault’s factory team and Red Bull will be a great reference for them.
McLaren has confirmed that the double world champion will first try out a new car in which the team is hoping to return closer to the top after finished ninth out of the ten teams in 2017.
Eric Bouller said that McLaren wants to keep expectations low for 2018, but also try to exceed the expetations on the track, unlike with Honda year, when they promised a lot and achieved little progress.
Renault thinks they won’t be able to beat Red Bull and McLaren in 2018, who are still ahead with their well developed and structured organizations.
