Hamilton beats Bottas in dominant display for Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton won his fifth pole position of the season and 66th in his career after defeating team-mate Valtteri Bottas in the last flying lap who held pole position after the first attempts.

Hamilton was the fastest in Q1 and Q2 while Daniel Ricciardo crashed in Q3 after losing the rear end in the sixth corner and finishing in the wall after which the qualifying was interrupted 3 minutes and 33 seconds before the end.

Ten minutes after the Ricciardo incident the qualifying continued and Verstappen first came out of the pits in front of Bottas and Hamilton.

Hamilton has dramatically improved his time as he has run wide in the final sectorof his first attempt. Bottas also improved his time even though it wasn’t enough to threat Hamilton as he was four tenths slower than his team mate.

Kimi Raikkonen was the closest threat to Mercedes, but with 1.1 seconds behind Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel was 0.148 seconds slower than Raikkonen in fourth place, and Verstappen was only four hundreds slower in fifth place for Red Bull.

Perez and Ocon were sixth and seventh for Force India with 1.518 and 1.593 seconds behind, and Stroll and Massa eighth and ninth after the Stroll was faster than Massa for the first time this season (for 0.045 seconds).

The Kvyat was again faster than the two Toro Rossos in 11th and 12th although Sainz will start 15th for causing Canadian GP incident. Magnussen in Haas was the 13th fastest in front of the Hulkenberg in Renault and Wehrlein in Sauber.

Pascal Wehrlein went into second qualifying for only 0.017 seconds in front of Fernando Alonso in McLaren, Grosjean in Haas, Ericsson in Sauber and Vandoorne in McLaren Honda.

Jolyon Palmer in Renault did not even qualify after his car sustained damage in third practice session.

McLaren drivers Alonso and Vandoorne race will start from the last two places due to as many as 75 penalty places they earned together due to changes of the power unit’s elements.
