On this day in 2011 we saw an exciting fight between Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber while Sebastian Vettel had an unusually bad day in his dominant season as he qualified outside of the front row for the first time in 2011.
Vettel dominated the first year with Pirelli’s tyres in 2011 and 18 out of 19 races started out of the first row with 15 poles, but he was just third at his home race at Nurburgring, behind Webber and Hamilton.
In the race, Seb was also in the shadow of his teammate who finished third behind Hamilton and Alonso, who led an exciting battle after Alonso came out of the pits.
Hamilton and McLaren did not look good in practice, but with complete change in settings ahead of qualifying, Lewis found the rhythm and won the second starting place. In the race he drove brilliantly and celebrated in his most difficult season in Formula 1.
“Winning today is extremely positive for us, but we still have a lot of work. Today I had to try to do everything perfectly, be aggressive and control the situation.”
“It seems to me that the moves I’ve done today are some of my most accurate ever. Drive with my head, but with my heart it is a great pleasure.”
“The championship fight will be very, very, very difficult in this situation, but we’re back in the game and I really hope we can continue like this.”
Vettel had 216 points after 10 of 19 races, Webber 139, Hamilton 134 and Alonso 130. Red Bull led 355 points, and McLaren had 243.
